1. Captive Company vs Independent Agent vs Broker

- Captive Agents (State Farm, Allstate) are those that represent a specific insurer. These agents are working on the insurance company’s behalf and may not have your best interests in mind.

2. How the Agent Makes Money
Most company agents and independent agents get paid a commission from the insurance company that they represent. Insurance brokers may also charge an additional fee. These broker fees are designed to pay the insurance agent or broker for the extra time they spend working with you one on one with your policy.

Generally, the more products you can bundle with the same company and their partners the more discounts you can earn.
6. Value vs Price
Don’t automatically assume that because an insurance agent is quoting you the lowest prices that they have the best value. The prices you are being quoted could be low because they don’t include adequate coverage. Work with an insurance agent that will go over all the coverage details and give you the most value for the price they charge.
