Does Home Insurance Cover Cell Phones?

Your home insurance will cover your cell phone from the following perils:

  • Theft
  • Storm damage
  • Fire damage
  • You accidentally drop it in the toilet

Home insurance will not cover your cell phone if:

  • You lose/misplace the phone
  • You intentionally damage the phone
  • The phone dies from old age (wear and tear)

Should you file a claim?

Even if your phone is stolen or you accidentally let it go swimming, filing a $1,000 home insurance claim is a pretty bad idea. Your home insurance deductible is often $500 - $2,500. If you file a claim for a $1,000 piece of stolen property and you have a $1,000 deductible, you won't get paid anything from the insurance company BUT the claim will still go on your claims record for 5 years

We recommend not filing a claim unless it is at least 2x-3x your deductible. You want to save your policy for the big disasters. Your phone has a lot of sentimental value, but far less property value than your house or your roof. When you file small claims, it can come back to bite you with higher premiums in the future. Insurance carriers see your claims history and usually charge you more if they see multiple small claims on your record.

Hope that helps and sorry for your loss!
